The No.850 Farm in Heilongjiang Province is the first military-developed farm under leadership of General Wang Zhen, which was set up in 1954 by railway soldiers, and it is now a modern business conglomerate covering a variety of businesses as being agriculture, animal husbandry, industry, commerce and trade.
The farm has arable land at 450,000 mu, forests at 135,000 mu, grassland at 17,000 mu and water area at 5,000 mu with rich output of rice, soybean, corn, wheat, white pumpkin seed and red cardamom. In particular, the farm has built up a 300,000-mu green paddy field base with annual output at 200,000 tons and a milk cow base of 4,000 cows with annual milk output at 12,000 tons.
The farm has a population of 15,000 with full-time employees at 7,641 in 10 management zones and 16 business units. The GDP of the farm in 2004 reached RMB 290 million.
Accumulated fixed asset investment in the farm has reached RMB 390 million ever since the establishment with 2,460 agricultural machines and equipments, including combine harvesters, large, medium and small-sized tractors as well as domestic-made and imported sprayers. The farm also set up several companies in rice processing, bio pharmaceutical, cereal processing center, seedling plant as well as machinery manufacturing with major products of rice, bio-fertilizer, bio-insecticide and agricultural equipment.
The farm has very convenient transportation conditions with Hadong Railway and Fanghu Road passing through the farm, and it even has its exclusive railway of 1.8 km. The farm has two cargo transport stations with cargo platform at 22,973 square meters. There is also a small airport of 12,000 square metes for agriculture airplanes. The National Committee of Science and Technology have named the farm as the Trial Zone for Agriculture Research and Technology in Sanjiang Plain ever since the 6th Five-Year Plan with accumulated benefits created by research reaching RMB 1.17 billion. In 2004, the Heilongjiang Agriculture Administration named the farm as the Example Base of Science and Technology. There is also a beautiful town in the farm, and the farm's second-level eco-system zone has also received state recognition.
